DAY ELEVEN
" We want to stay as honest to our music as possible"
Suiciderock: Could you give us a little introduction about the band?
Janne: We are Day Eleven from Tampere and we are a bunch of guys who like to play rock and live the Rock`n Roll life. Kimmo: We are together for about ten years now. Janne, Olli and me started the band in 1994. Janne: Yes, since that time we are working on this band stuff and this is almost half of our life. We released our first record in 2005. Our new record will be out next spring, next March. So things are looking good. Suiciderock: What will the new album be like? Janne: It`s rougher if you compare it to the foregoing album. It´s heavier and it contains better songwriting. It`s more focused. Kimmo:The new record is more a group effort. The old one was written mostly by me and Janne. For this one we were working all together in the rehearsal place and in the studio. It came up very different. Suiciderock: What made you start playing music and what`s your musical background? Kimmo: Janne and me met in the age of four in some musical playschool. There it started for us. Olli: I have kind of a classical background. I used to play violin and cello and stuff like that. When I was twelve years old, I got my first guitar. Janne: Duff McKagan is probably the coolest guy ever. I guess that`s why Olli started to play guitar. Kimmo: These are his routes. Olli: I know Kimmo since I´m seven years old. Kimmo: I guess you are the reason why we all are in the band and why I started to play guitar. Olli: Probably it was Guns `n Roses who influenced me. Janne: I guess it started with this whole Metallica, Guns`n Roses thing. Kimmo: I remember when I heard “Welcome to the Jungle” for the first time, it melted my brain. That was just the coolest. Suiciderock: What was your first musical memory? Janne: It must have been at Sundays school when I was three or four years old. We were singing this songs you sing while being in church and I was clapping and giving the beat. And the teacher in Sunday school told me to stop that. Kimmo: I remember when I was listening to Michael Jacksons Thriller. It has this scary sound in the beginning of this tune. Actually my first musical memory goes back to the Paddington Bear. Matti: I remember watching ZZ Tops music video “Sleeping bag”. That was when I went to school and I was six years old. I turned the TV on and I was blown away. That was really cool. Luca: I was in my dad`s car and we were listening to a old cassette. There was this Annie Lennox song “Sweet dreams” and that impressed me. Suiciderock: People from the music industry always try to put bands into a certain corner. How would you define your music style? Janne: It`s really frustrating to describe your music by yourself. I think we are a alternative rock band. Whatever we try to do, we are always ending up sounding like some grunge band. Kimmo: I don`t think that for example bands like Guns`n Roses or Deftones are very different from each other. We are simply a rock band. Janne: We always try to be open minded. We don`t try to stick ourselves into a corner. Suiciderock: What do you want people to walk away with after your shows? Janne: I just hope that the honesty in our songs reaches the people in the audience. We just try to get on stage and do our thing and we want to stay as honest to our music as possible. We just go on stage and kick some ass. Suiciderock: While talking about your songs where do you take the inspiration for your songwriting from? Janne: It depends. For example we put on MTV and we find something that sucks than we try to bring out some good elements of this. Of course music from other bands is always a big source of inspiration. Olli: Maybe hangovers are a good inspiration, too. Kimmo: Some songs come about by incident we play something, we like it and so a new song is done. Janne: Like we were telling a little bit earlier we are very open minded and so there is no certain form for the songwriting. Kimmo, Matti and me sometimes write the songs and sometimes we go to the rehearsal room for some jam sessions where we get new ideas for the songs. So as you can see a lot of different things play a role. Suiciderock: Who made up your name for the band? Janne: Just two words stick together. Kimmo: There was this band in the States called Eleven. Olli: I remember that we had this list where all the names we had gathered were standing on. Kimmo: And we had to make the decision for a name to be able to sign the record deal. Janne: And I remember we had also the worse band names. We are together now for twelve years and our names have always changed. Suiciderock: Can you tell us some names you had before? Kimmo: You have to find it out by yourself. At least we don´t have a history of some shitty artist names. Suiciderock: The year is about to end. Did you ever make some silly New Years promises to yourself? Olli: We don´t do that anymore. Probably we promised something like to cut off smoking or whatever. We did that every year. Luca: I hope that the next year will be better than the last. Kimmo: I agree. I really hope that next year will be better. Suiciderock: How will you spend your New Years Eve? Janne: I`m going to Sauna and I will have a couple of beers. I think it`s not gonna be such a big party tonight. Kimmo: I`ve got twelve beers waiting for me. Olli: I guess we will pass out before the new year starts. We`ve been partying two days now. Janne: Yeah it should be fun. Olli: I will see what´s happening. Suiciderock: Your future plans for the band? Janne: Well, we have been doing this for such a long time now I guess we just see what happens. We have a new album coming out and we will working our asses off and I hope we have the possibility to get it out to the ears of the people. Kimmo: We hope we can do things honestly and that we can enjoy what we do. I think right now we are in a pretty good situation. I had lots of fun with this band. Hopefully we will have more fun and that the next year is going to be great. Questions of the questionbox: Kimmo: Tell us what we can find in your fridge! No light. Some cottage cheese I love that shit. Maybe some things from years ago. Olli: Hey I got this question which ringtone do you have on your mobile? I can answer this one easily because my dad is just calling me. Kimmo: You have your first date, where would you go? Maybe I would go for a walk or something and than I would try to find my way to some alcohol to calm down and that´s it. Janne: Well, I have to name three things everyone should try in life. What should I say? Olli: Sex, drugs and Rock`n Roll. Janne: That sounds pretty good. Everyone should try to find hisself. Luca: If you could play any character of any film ever made, who would it be? Probably Nicolas Cage in “Leaving Las Vegas”. Matti: What`s your secret obsession? It`s not secret anymore if I will tell it, but it is something psychodelic.
