MY EARLY MUSTANG
2005

“The best songs are written within 5 minutes”

Suiciderock: Who had the idea to found My early Mustang, and what was the reason?
Flo:
Our Singer and Guitarist Tim Eiermann came up with the idea in March 2003. He called me up and asked if I was up for something new, with additional players Andy and Wolle. I agreed within a split second for we have pretty much the same musical background and I was stoked coming together and playing music. So the reason was the sake of playing music we all love!

Suiciderock: Who made up the name? Does it have a special meaning?
Flo:
Tim came up with the name, he catched it somewhere in the Internet. I think this name suits our music good for the Mustang is a great car, style combined with classic roots. That’s pretty much all about our band, too. We combine new, modern styles with lots of influences of the early eighties. So we’re classic as well as ”fresh” ... haha.

Suiciderock: How would you describe your music style?
Flo:
Well pretty much a huge mixture of all styles we like. I give you some reference for that: Rick Springfield, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, All, The Cure, The Smiths, Social Distortion, and many many more. We express ourselves by letting all these different kinds of music flow in our music, so we’re not limiting ourselves in any way: if we wanna do a Metal song, we do it; if we want a ballad we also go for it.

Suiciderock: Please tell us a bit more about your album and about the recordings.
Flo:
We’ve recorded the album in summer 2004, in a studio near Frankfurt called ”ultra Ton Studios” with Producer Alex Theisen and his partner Thies. We had a great time and just let things go their way. Most of the song had been finished before we entered the studio, and some songs got their shape just being in the studio and working on it. Being in the studio’s is always a good part in being in a band. I love it.

Suiciderock: What inspires you for your songs and lyrics?
Flo:
Well, mostly personal experience and everyday life. The best songs are written in 5 minutes, you don´t think about it, you just let it go. I think there’s no recipe in writing songs, but as far as my experience goes it has to do a lot with inspiration. You know sometimes you just lack that special intuition to be able to write something valuable. If that’s the case you just need to chill and don´t force it. Songs come when they come.

Suiciderock: With what kind of music did you grow up? Your favourite bands?
Flo:
My favourite question! You know, i started with my first punk record at the age of 13. It was ”young, loud and snotty” from the Dead Boys. Soon the Pistols came along, as well as The Stooges and early Fugazi and Minor Threat. I grew up in small town, so there wasn’t really any scene. I was pretty much my own scene ... haha ... so my interest in music kept growing since then and still is ;-) I grew up with The Cure, The Smiths, Mudhoney and early Sub Pop Stuff long before anyone knew about Nirvana. I never really was a Nirvana fan, i thought Tad, Blood Circus and Bullet LaVolta rocked way more...funny. I also listened to a lot of Amphetamine Reptile Records Stuff like GodBullies, HaloOfFlies or early Helmet Stuff. Lotsa Noise Rock stuff there. But i was always open minded to ”commercial” stuff, and i still love many things I hear in the radio, such as Maroon5 ”She will be loved”, probably one of the greatest songs in the last 10 years. And, can I say that (haha), I’m a huge fan of Avril Lavigne. ”I’m with you” is KILLER!
Recently my favourite artists are Ryan Adams, Head Automatica, Big Collapse and of course a billion more.

Suiciderock: You are all still in other bands. How does this work with My early Mustang?
Flo:
It’s ok, even though sometimes you have to struggle to manage to all of it. As long as we can play all shows we’re offered and record our future albums in time everything´s cool. So far it worked out good.

Suiciderock: How important is My early Mustang for you, or is it just a sideproject?
Flo:
Everything I do I take serious to the max! So there’s no such word as sideproject in my book. I think otherwise I wouldn’t do it, if I’m not up for it a 100%. I think you shouldn’t put a lot of time and work in something if you are not really concerned about it.

Suiciderock: What can people expect from a My early Mustang show?
Flo:
Pure fun in playing music, loud guitars and four dorks making a fool out of themselves on stage ... haha.

Suiciderock: Are there plans for a own tour?
Flo:
We played some shows in January and February and now me and the other guys are touring with our other bands, namely Flyswatter and Liquido. We will appear at some festivals this year and are planing a tour at the end of this year, as well as recording new album!

Suiciderock: What do you think about the German rock scene at the moment?
Flo:
I think it has healed itself, even though the music market still has to struggle with decreasing sales. But all in all I think we have a vital scene, some good bands ... and some bad...haha...but anyway Germany’s still providing the world with some awesome music and artists that are capable of gaining international success.

Suiciderock: Are there any artist you would like to work with?
Flo:
Not specifically, i think any musician that’s connecting with me musically is one worth working with. I think it would be interesting to work with somebody of a different musical genre, like a Hip-Hop artist or maybe a blues artist..

Suiciderock: What was your greatest experience as a band so far?
Flo:
There’s so many. I think generally be able to play with the guys is one the greatest experiences you can get. I hope I’ll be able to continue making records and playing live for a long time from now..

Suiciderock: What was your worst experience as a band so far?
Flo:
..well: Sleeping on a cold floor always sucked...haha ... but it’s funny, cause even the worst experiences turn into a good story after a while. Strange. Maybe that proves that there are no worst experiences at all.

Suiciderock: Anything you regret?
Flo:
No!!

Suiciderock: Is there anything you would never do as a band?
Flo:
Yeah: perform in one of those casting shows and fuck myself up for the sake of believing some bullshit some ”jury” tells me. It’s disgusting how this phenomenon messes up what i love the most. Sad, even for the artists being burnt!

Suiciderock: What are your future plans for My early Mustang?
Flo:
Playing as much shows as we can and hopefully recording our second album soon. It will be different I guess. Be prepared for something you didn’t expect ;-)
